Pen and Pastel
There are many types of oranges originally from Southern Asia and India, having spread to the Mediterranean then the New World via Christopher Columbus. Maybe the most popular fruit known to mankind after the apple, it is a symbol of warmth and sharing. The poem, Oranges by Roisin Kelly, “I’ll choose for myself next time who I’ll reach out and take as mine/having decided to ignore the apples the mangoes and the kiwis/This is how I will choose you, by feeling you smelling you, by slipping you into my coat/and a miniature sun burning a hole in my pocket”
With my Contorto drawing, I seek to highlight the ubiquity often overlooked commonality of this one time exotic fruit and the woman’s apparent offer to share.
