Perhaps the most famous and recognizable painting of the mythological goddess Aphrodite/Venus is the one that shows her standing on a seashell “Birth of Venus” by Sandro Botticelli (1484) Aphrodite whose very name in Greek means “foam-born” comes from the seas, and with her birth the history of mankind begins. Sexuality, with its desires, it drives to continue the human story in the hands of womankind. The foam of desire, the communication of love, the progression of it all starts from waters of the sea. It's the reason why our bodies are 70% water, and a substantial portion has the salinity of seawater. My painting seeks to show an inverted view of Botticelli’s figure. This Aphrodite figure reclines throne-like. She the Venus is the original Queen Mother, the supreme nexus of evolution and desire as her seashell scepter recalls the origin of all of us and the unending will to survive and thrive.
